john amato

boy of destiny

and i thought i went to a good school (outliers: malcolm gladwell)

Posted by juplife on December 21, 2008

i’m reading malcolm gladwell’s new book, outliers. like his others, it’s a fascinating book. he takes a look successful people and analyses what made them succesful.

one section in particular i found interesting. he talks about people who scored at a genius level on IQ tests and the relationship that has to success - in particular, to winning a nobel prize. gladwell shows that there is essentially a threshold which if someone scores above a certain IQ test score they have the ability to become a nobel prize winner. to prove that he breaks down the recent winners and where they went to school. one would think that ivy league schools would produce a larger proportion of nobel winners than other schools. however, the list shows that they come from many different universities and ivy league schools are not represented more than your ‘average’ universities.

to make that point, he says:

to be a nobel prize winner, apparently, you have to be smart enough to get into a college at least as good as notre dame or the university of illinois. that’s all.

thanks malcolm. there goes the notion that i went to a highly respected academic institution.

busy busy busy (i just want to sleep)

Posted by juplife on July 6, 2008

i’ve been a little lazy on juplife lately. june was a crazy month with the epic race taking up quite a bit of time. i’ve also been working quite a bit more than originally planned. i figure i owe a few updates on what has happened recently because sometimes the mobile blogs just don’t tell the whole story.

the pozes all came together last weekend. the girls all brought their man candy with them too. the real star of the show was kate and matt’s little guy, jack. looks like naming your kid jack is all the rage these days.

the johns

the johns

john updike, this one not this one, visited a couple weeks ago to play for john’s korner bar softball. after receiving all of the facebook invites for our games, he realized the summer of drew wouldn’t be complete without visiting ’south toledo’. sadly, even with mr updike on our team we couldn’t pull out the victory but we still had a great time post game at jkb. it’s hard not to with good friend john. and that’s why i hope to return to new orleans for the sugar bowl next season.

last monday was the notre dame club of toledo celebrity golf outing. toledo’s foremost authority on everything, dr dan williams, was kind enough to sponsor our group. his son, little boy, and adam joined us. we certainly weren’t the best foursome out there, we didn’t have a celebrity and i didn’t have my own clubs, but we had a great time.

chuck should really start a business organizing charity golf outings. this was his second of the month and he did an amazing job on both. celebrities at the nd outing included heismen trophy winner johnny lattner, frank stams and dave casper. his kids unlimited outing featured jim jackson, gene keady, osu heismen trohpy winner troy smith, and clark kellogg. pretty, pretty, pretty good.

as always, i’ve been taking plenty of photos. you can update yourself with all of them at flickr.

but he still hasn’t won the bookstore basketball tournament like his brother

Posted by juplife on April 22, 2008

thanks to marion st. fellow, matt lilly, for passing on this link from ndnation. the quote of interest from the post:

When they beat the number one seed, the other team was missing Scott Smith and their best player, a kid named DR Amato, who is probably the best shooter on campus.

hopefully that trip to SF last weekend was worth it for dr. because now he only has one more chance to match the success of rohn in bookstore basketball and actually finish the tournament ranked #1.

what ND football blogs are ignoring

Posted by juplife on September 17, 2007

those that know me know that i do not like charlie weis. all of the pro ND football blogs out there are, in my opinion, ignoring what notre dame should really stand for - a class program that puts character above winning. weis is their savior and they fail to look objectively at our current situation.

mgoblog i think does a much better job at looking at michigans situation this way. when they lost to app state, their blog when pink and was filled with kittens. ND fans are too arrogant to ever do something like this. what happened to the lou holtz idea of self deprecation. mgoblog does a great job of explaining my real issue with weis:

Weis is a colossal asshole. Heck, anyone who’s read one of his many ridiculously arrogant press conference quotes (the grand mother of them begins this post) or saw the embarassing 60 Minutes puff piece — wherein Weis came off as a bully and a jackass — when Notre Dame was returning to glory for the umpteenth time knows this. The only wonder is that the media spent the better part of 2.5 years pumping him up as Weis E. Coyote, Certified Super Genius, largely because Weis spent every available moment telling the media that he and his ACME catalog of incredibly sophisticated devices were worth a foolproof touchdown every game. Somehow I doubt even Tyrone Willingham would have Notre Dame scoring -7 points per game.

hopefully ND fans can get over themselves soon and realize that it’s more important to have a legendary person as coach rather than someone who will win at all costs regardless of how he treats people.

fire weis. bring back bob.

go buckeyes! beat youngstown state!

Posted by juplife on September 3, 2007

the trip to nd was a solid one this weekend. made the trip with the all star of the weekend, aidan. aidan is the all american boy from mikey’s alma mater, st. paul’s. i’ve been bugging him ever since i’ve been home to be fun and come hang out. i think he’s glad he finally took me up on it.

we had a late departure time on friday but made up for it once we got there. dr is living with zeb in turtle creek. they had a nice place until this weekend. all of dr’s buddies came out for the show. there was potts, hops, dave, gay, hummer, and plenty others. unfortunately, my buddies are not as cool and all but beesman, stayed away for the weekend.

on saturday i declared that i’m boycotting notre dame stadium until charlie weis is fired. after the game, this might happen sooner than you think. at least i’m winning the amato family pick ‘em pool since i was the only one who picked gt to win.

the tailgate was fun though. the pozes were there, uncle john short (although i couldn’t find his tailgate for some reason), the bergeron’s, all of marion street, and beth and steph. i love notre dame games.
