i’m a little late with the link for this one, but the toledo blade had a write up on osu/michigan gameday about the tressel t-shirt. this one was penned by blade sportswriter, matt markey, and, despite the subject, is an excellent article.
i think it’s funny how i’m referred to as a former quarterback for cchs and can’t seem to take a decent photo. but he covered every important topic and kept the focus on the people’s interest - the ohio state buckeyes.

the peach section of the toledo blade is not exactly a place i expected to make an appearance. ryan smith explains in his article, vested interest: once unfashionable sweaters have become hip, that jim tressel is quite the hipster in his sideline sweater vest.
it’s a decent article. he mentions the buckeye wolverine shop, who likes to sell my stuff and, of course, that there is a jim tressel sweater vest t-shirt available. however, he ommitted where to buy the tees online. since i need jupmode.com to get out there a little more, i’m pushing it down your face again..buy them for everyone for the holidays.

A Notre Dame grad who came up with the Jim Tressel OSU Sweater Vest T-shirt has some explaining to do.
John Amato of Holland claims to be both an OSU and Notre Dame fan, but even he knows that is hard to believe.
“I am not a die-hard sports fan like some people are because I am around it so much. It tempers your enthusiasm,” the 26-year-old said.
The idea for the vest came up during the 2006 football season, when the Buckeyes went to the BCS National Championship game.
Amato announced that someone should make one of those tuxedo T-shirts that look like a sweater vest, and his dad said, “You do it.” The original idea was a silk-screen T-shirt, but evolved into a red, V-neck cutoff with the sleeves sewn into it. Tressel is famous for wearing a sweater vest and tie.
“It is a fall/winter item, and sales are big,” said Amato, who owns Jup Mode.com, the site where the shirts are sold. “They were big the first few weeks of the season and before the season started and then during the big games.”
Sales are reflective of the season. They flat-lined when Southern California beat OSU this season, according to Amato. Now that OSU is doing better, sales are picking up again.
Amato launched JupMode.com in 2007 with the OSU Sweater Vest T-shirt as its sole product. He has built upon the OSU Sweater Vest T-Shirt and now offers adult, youth and toddler sizes, in addition to onesies at select stores like Kroger and The Andersons. All of his products, which are manufactured in India, are officially licensed by The Ohio State University. The OSU Sweater Vest T-shirt is $20; youth shirts are $19; toddler sizes are $18, and the onesies are $16.
Amato grew up in Perrysburg and graduated from Central Catholic in 2001. He attended Notre Dame and received his bachelor’s in marketing. He sells his shirts at a 7-Eleven store during OSU home games and even attends some away games. He has sold more than 10,000 T-shirts in the past two years. He even sent a shirt to Tressel, who acknowledged he had received it.
“It would be amazing to get him to put one on,” Amato said.

at the beginning of the football season, i was contacted by doug lesmerises, author of the buckeye blog for the cleveland plain dealer, about the tressel vest t-shirt. he was interested in it and was planning on writing a piece about coach tressel in the future and thought it would be an interesting side note. we spoke on the phone after the initial email and he stopped by our table before a game to learn more about what i do and how i got there. i forgot about it after some time figuring he just got too busy for it. well, this friday he called back for some more information and to let me know that he was publishing the article on saturday.
the article surprised me in that it’s all about me. doug included a bunch of great quotes from rick van brimmer, the head of trademark and licensing at ohio state, and even talked to tressel about it. click through here to read the full article at cleveland.com. if you know anyone in cleveland that can save a copy, please ask them to. i’d love to have one.
i knew that an article in the plain dealer would mean great things. everal orders have been placed since then, but the coolest thing was that it led to a short piece on deadspin linking to the article. as some of you know, deadspin is my favorite website. to see my face on the homepage was quite a thrill.
the tressel t-shirt was a great halloween costume. it’s going to be an even better holiday gift - especially the onesie. spread the word eh.

i’m convinced this is the best video i’ve ever taken. there are so many good things about this video. you must watch the whole thing. sanford is the man. highlights include:
- don’t make him talk about pool.
- you’ve got a customer.
- he normally doesn’t take his hat off.
- he does body work - on cars and especially on females.
- he’s prone to cramping.
- at jupmode we’ve got real reasonable prices, we got your size, we’ve even got toddlers.
- if nothing else, sanman is a gentleman who helps fallen ladies.
- the woman didn’t pick her feet up high enough.
